Back to Basics: Essential Tips for a Healthy Spine.
Five practical tips for spinal health, posture, lifting, movement, sleep, and preventative care.
Long hours at desks, poor posture, and sedentary lifestyles can all place strain on the back. Our spine supports every movement and activity, so it deserves deliberate care.
Back pain can be made worse by lifestyle and work habits. These five tips can help you get back on track.
Five tips for spinal health
- Good posture. Ensure your workstation is set up properly. Avoid slouching or straining, sit upright, and use adequate lumbar support.
- Lift safely. Bend at the knees and hips rather than the waist. Keep objects close, use your legs rather than your back, and avoid twisting while lifting.
- Maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight can add strain to joints and surrounding structures. Regular activity and a balanced diet can support bone and joint health.
- Sleep well. Use a supportive mattress and a pillow that supports the natural curve of your neck. If you sleep on your side, a pillow between the legs may help reduce stiffness.
- Think preventatively. Do not wait until pain becomes severe before seeking advice. Looking after your body early can help prevent problems becoming established.
