Summer is often a time for excursions and new experiences. With planning and budgeting comes a set of safety questions that are easy to overlook.

For people leaving the UK, one major risk is not exotic infection or dramatic natural disaster. The leading cause of injury and death for tourists is often road traffic accidents, including pedestrian injuries.

Travel safety points

  1. Check which side of the road traffic uses. This matters whether you are driving or crossing as a pedestrian.
  2. Do not assume every marked crossing will be treated as a safe pedestrian crossing in the way you expect.
  3. Wear seatbelts wherever you are.
  4. Consider the vehicle and driver. If a driver seems tired, ask for a break or choose another option.
  5. If driving, use a reputable hire company, understand local rules, and allow more time than you think you need.
  6. Download maps for offline use before travelling. Data can fail at the worst moment.
  7. Avoid driving when tired and avoid medication that causes drowsiness if you need to drive.
  8. Be cautious with off-road vehicles and quad bikes, especially if you have never used them before.

Travel should be enjoyable. Good preparation helps you stay safe enough to enjoy it.
