Visiting Saudi Arabia?.
Cultural and practical considerations for people travelling to Saudi Arabia, including etiquette, modesty, prayer times, and visa medicals.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is undergoing major development, bringing a significant influx of people with expertise from across the world. For many, travelling to the Arabian Peninsula is work-related, but understanding the cultural experience can make the visit more valuable and respectful.
Saudi Arabia remains deeply rooted in its traditions and Islamic values. These points may help you prepare.
Cultural points to consider
- Hospitality is important. Do not be surprised by generous gestures, whether a cup of mint tea or a meal invitation. Accept graciously where appropriate.
- Modesty in dress matters. Men and women are expected to dress respectfully in public.
- Modesty in behaviour is expected. Public displays of affection are considered inappropriate.
- Prayer times shape the rhythm of the day. Businesses may close during congregational prayer, and Friday is the main weekly congregational day.
- Phrases such as Mashallah and Inshallah are common and reflect religious and cultural values.
- Greetings matter. A handshake may be common, but men and women do not always shake hands with the opposite sex.
- Offer and accept items with the right hand when possible.
- Alcohol and recreational drugs are strictly prohibited.
- Avoid taking photographs of people without permission, especially women, and avoid photographing government or military buildings.
- Learning a few basic Arabic phrases can be helpful and appreciated.
- Cards are widely accepted, but carrying some cash can still be useful.
- Perfume and incense are culturally valued. Accepting a small dab of perfume is often considered good manners.
If you travel beyond city boundaries, do so safely and with an experienced guide.
